The quick answer for this is no, anime doesn’t need fanservice to be popular, or to be good. Hell, most of the isekai slops and fanservice heavy shows of each season I actively avoid. Not because I think fanservice is inherently bad, but usually shows that focus hard on fanservice aren't really that story driven or thought provoking. And don’t think I’m becoming a boomer and the only thing I like are anime with deep stories, hell, I enjoy myself some Grand Blue. It’s just that ecchi, harem fanservice shows can get pretty old after a while. And with having little time in the day once you get older, I have to be selective about the things I watch and waste my time with.

So who’s right? Do we need fanservice, or can anime survive without it? Well, both. Anime doesn’t need fanservice to survive, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to remove it all together. Like with how people keep fighting to remove “ugly” girls from video games, everything has its place. I might not watch heavily fanservice shows, but that doesn’t mean I want those removed from other people who like them. I will always have my Frieren, Kaiji, and Attack on Titan’s. So if I can still have those bangers, why would I want them to stop producing fanservice slop for others. Also, a tit here and there isn’t bad by any means, I just don’t want it distracting from the plot. So overall. I’m fine with fanservice, it’s just not a make or break scenario for if an anime is going to fail or not. If that was true, the top anime would be ones that feature a lot of tits and ass yeah?
